Styling Dread Locks

People tell me that after growing dread locks they sometimes feel like the only thing they can do is keep them up in a ponytail or hanging down. They say that not many new styles can be achieved because locks are not easy to style or no one knows how to make them attractive. Well, When styling dread locks there are a few things to keep in mind.
Are the dread locks big and bulky? where they professionally maintained ever? How long are the Dreadlocks? Does the person have a bold spot or broken hair? After asking yourself these questions you can take the next step of deciding what will work best for the Dread Locks on your head.
If a person has mid length dread locks that are shoulder length and sectioned off into boxes then there are a few fun things that can be done for a fresh spin on their hair. They can consider getting the hair braided into French braids, get hair twist, Bantu knots, bump the front portion for extra flirt hair, get a pin up style or even have hair ties.
Lets explore hair rolls and Bantu knots on mid length hair
Dread Locks can be styled in many fun and creative ways. The hair is normally strong like rope so it can be tied and twisted to create a new and refreshing hair design. To create a simple Updo with mid length or long dread locks simply grab a few rubber bands, pins and hair oil.
To begin section off a few locks and using your fingers, roll the hair one individual lock over the other with even tension. Keep the hair as close to the scalp as possible. Continue rolling each dread lock under the next until you have about six in a row. Use a rubber band to hold the rolled up locks in place.
Follow the previous steps until the top section on the entire head has hair rolls made with dreadlocks and rubber bands.
At the back section of the head take three individual locks into your hands and twist them together into a ball. To secure the ball use a rubber band and double tie it to keep the dread locks in place. The ball you created is called a Bantu Knot and you can continue this process until the entire back portion of the head has Bantu knots, while the front portion has hair rolls.
The free hanging portion of the hair rolls can also be rolled into a Bantu knot to give the hairstyle balance.
Use the hair pins to hold any loose ends in place and to prevent hair from sticking out.
Spray the entire head with light hair oil of your choice.
To add more style and creativity to this dread lock Updo simply add small flowers or jewelry designed pins to the hair.
This hairstyle is creative and fashionable yet very easy to create and can be worn for up to two weeks with proper hair care.
Persons looking for a fresh spin on dreadlocks can follow these steps to a new and exciting hairstyle that can be created in minutes.
To keep this Updo looking its best, spray hair regularly with hair oil and wear a hair bonnet before bedtime to reduce dust and frizz accumulation.
Short Dread Locks
For the person who has just started growing their dread Locks and only have about three inches grown in, I would suggest regular maintenance.
When Dread Locks are kept neat and clean they can also be very stylish and attractive with hair shells or wooden beads hanging from the ends of maybe ten or twelve.
Try hanging gold or sliver charms from the ends also, this can dress up short dread locks with little work and looks great for weeks.
To make wooden beads hang from an individual Lock simply slide the hair through the bead and wrap the end of hair up and around the bead. Use a rudder band to hold the bead onto the hair and to secure it in place.
Long Dread Locks
After Dread Locks are mature and grown down past the shoulders the hair becomes more challenging. Longer hair in general can be more work because it takes longer to style and maintain.
Hair ties on longer hair is an excellent way to conceal the length of the hair while making it look unique and creative.
To create a hair tie simply section off an area of dread locks and separate it into two. Holding each section of dread locks in your hands, tie the hair as if you wear tying your shoe strings. Cross the first sections over the other section and wrap the first section under the other creating a hair tie. Continue this until the entire head is complete. Use bobby pins to hold the ends of the hair in a ball. To create the ball simply wrap the hair ends under using your fingers to secure the hair and pin it in place.
Using these steps can give short, mid length or long dread locks a new and exciting twist.
When Dread Locks are bulky sometimes they can be trimmed down with a razor to create a neater looking Lock. This should only be done by a professional. Because some times the hair may be shaved too much and cause locks to become weak.Dread locks sometimes break off or become weak in some areas and if you want to save the length you can tie the hair, sew it in place with black hair thread or wrap it until it intertwines and strengthens.
